We are thrilled to tell you that Koha 16.05 has been released! Koha is a the world’s first free and open-source ILS (Integrated Library System). It is a widely used, and hugely popular library automation system. Koha is developed and maintained by a network of volunteers, librarians and companies from all over the globe (see the official page here).

The Koha Community releases a major upgrade every 6 months, and true to its promise, on May 26 2016, Koha 16.05 was unveiled to the world. It is the product of many months of work – featuring numerous bug fixes, enhancements and completely new features. You will also notice the naming convention has changed – the last Koha release was version 3.23 but starting with this latest upgrade it has changed to Koha 16.05. We’ve been unable to find any official explanation on the Koha website as to why this was so, but an educated (and pretty confident!) guess is that “Koha” stands for, well, Koha (duh!); “16” is for the year 2016 and “.05” represents the month in which it was release (May). So you can expect that all subsequent versions will follow this convention (which i think is much better than the previous one – it’s easier to know exactly when a version was released just by looking at the version name.

So, what can you expect from this new release? Over the next couple of weeks we will be putting out posts on select Koha enhancements, fixes and new features as well, so keep checking our blog for the latest updates! There are 7 new features (including the ability to pay library fines and fees via PayPal!), 340 enhancements, and 472 bug fixes. Mind-blowing, isn’t it?
